Dana Hunsberger - Rising to Her Potential

Dana Hunsberger was introduced to Gateway Employment Resources by Lower Merion High School in July of 2000.   By August of 2000 Dana was involved with Gateway’s R.I.S.E. Group (Reaching Independence Seeking Employment). This learning support program offered small group instruction and an opportunity for integration and supportive services needed for social, emotional, as well as academic support. This program also offered the continual ongoing group friendships that Dana had experienced at her Summer Variety Camp.

In September of 2000 an excited Dana was presented with an opportunity to work a trial shift at Wendy’s as a Dining Room Attendant. Dana was coached through her trial shift, and was offered a permanent position. Dana’s responsibilities include collecting and cleaning the trays, cleaning the tables and chairs, making sure the condiments are full, and sweeping the dining room floor. By setting clear goals and expectations, these tasks were learned and incorporated into Dana’s routine.

Dana received her high school diploma in June of 2001, and continues to thrive at Wendy’s with the help of Gateway, the staff at Wendy’s, and her supportive family. Dana is currently working four days a week, and when not working enjoys horseback riding and e-mailing her friends. Dana continues to see her friends at the RISE Group on Thursdays, and everyone is proud of her.

Manager at Wendy's

Dana has been with Wendy’s for a year and a half now, and since her start date has learned new tasks at Wendy’s. Steve Suzuki, Dana’s job coach, has seen the progression in Dana’s sense of responsibility, willingness to accept change, and ability to get along with others. Dana is often thanked for her helpfulness at Wendy’s, and strives to do a good job. Dana still needs reminders at times, but all can see her progression from the onset of Dana’s acceptance into our program.

Congratulations, and keep up the good work!
